New Tata Osprey arrives from R249,900 with a turbo engine and five-star pedigree

October 7, 2026

Quick Facts

  • The Tata Osprey launched in South Africa in September 2026 with a four-derivative range priced from R249,900.
  • A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is available from R279,900, while the flagship Creative+ PS DCA with panoramic sunroof costs R329,900.
  • Sold as the Nexon in India, the model has more than 1.1 million customers and holds five-star Bharat NCAP ratings for both Adult and Child Occupant Protection.

As spring returned to South Africa this September, so did a new bird. The Tata Osprey has arrived in local showrooms, adding a locally curated version of the Tata Nexon, one of Tata Motors’ most successful passenger vehicles, to Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles’ growing South African line-up.

“The timing feels particularly appropriate. Around this time of year the Osprey begins its seasonal return south, and this September our own Osprey lands in South Africa,” said Jeff Allison, General Manager of Marketing and Product for Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles South Africa.

The four-model range opens at R249,900 and tops out at R329,900.

“We are excited to welcome the Tata Osprey to the South African market. As we continue to strengthen TMPV’s product portfolio and bring compelling new offerings to our customers, we are confident that the Tata Osprey’s distinctive design, advanced technology and strong safety credentials will make it a compelling choice for South African customers. Additionally, the introduction of TATA.CARS further strengthens this momentum by bringing a bold new global identity to the brand as we continue to expand our presence in South Africa,” said Thato Magasa, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles South Africa.

A new name with a proven track record

The Osprey carries a name unique to South Africa, but under the skin it is the Nexon, retaining all the pedigree that made it India’s top-selling SUV. The name draws inspiration from the osprey, an apex explorer that thrives across sky, land and water, and the vehicle aims to blend premium urban comfort with the rugged spirit needed for off-grid adventures.

“While the Osprey name may be new to South Africa, the vehicle behind it arrives with a proven pedigree, having earned the trust of more than 1.1 million customers as the Tata Nexon in India,” explained Allison.

Yash Khandelwal, Head of International Business at TMPV, shared his enthusiasm for the launch. “We are delighted to introduce the Tata Osprey to South African customers, bringing a compelling blend of safety, performance, technology and value. South Africa remains a strategic market for Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, and Osprey represents another important milestone in our long-term commitment to the country. Encouraged by the strong response to our brand since re-entry, and supported by our valued partner Motus, we are committed to steadily expanding our presence, portfolio and customer experience in the market.”

More SUV for your money

The Osprey’s appeal goes beyond its price. It brings together strong safety credentials, turbocharged performance, dual-clutch technology, practical versatility and desirable convenience features at a highly competitive price.

Whether buyers are moving into their first SUV, upgrading from a smaller car or simply looking to get more from their budget, the Osprey offers an increasingly sophisticated package as they move up through the range, without losing sight of affordability.

“Osprey has been positioned to fit naturally into everyday South African life. It is equally at home navigating the weekday commute as it is carrying a family away for the weekend, while giving customers access to technology, performance and features they may not expect at this price point,” added Allison.

Five-star safety from the entry level up

Safety starts with the structure around the occupants. A fortified cabin forms the foundation, supported by a comprehensive set of active and passive safety features.

Every Osprey sold in South Africa comes standard with six airbags, Electronic Stability Programme, ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, ISOFIX child-seat anchors with top tether, seatbelt reminders for all occupants and rear parking sensors.

“For us, safety starts with what surrounds you. Osprey combines a strong, fortified cabin with the active and passive safety systems designed to help protect the people inside it. Importantly, the core safety package is standard across the range, so customers do not have to move up through the grades to access these fundamental safety features,” said Allison.

The Osprey also benefits from the independent crash-test record of the Nexon on which it is based. The latest-generation Nexon earned a five-star rating in Global NCAP’s #SaferCarsForIndia assessment, published in 2024, with Global NCAP rating the bodyshell as stable and noting strong performance in adult and child occupant protection.

The Nexon went on to achieve five stars for both Adult Occupant Protection and Child Occupant Protection under Bharat NCAP, scoring 29.41 out of 32 and 43.83 out of 49 respectively. The Bharat NCAP assessment was published in October 2024 and remains valid until October 2028.

Turbo power and dual-clutch smarts

Every Osprey is powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 88.2 kW at 5,500 rpm and 170 Nm between 1,750 and 4,000 rpm. The entry-level Smart+ pairs it with a five-speed manual gearbox.

The seven-speed dual-clutch automatic enters the range from R279,900 in the Smart+ DCA and is also standard on the Creative DCA and flagship Creative+ PS DCA. DCA derivatives come with a Smart E-Shifter, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and Eco, City and Sport drive modes, so drivers can tailor the vehicle’s responses to the conditions and their own preferences.

Technology and comfort that punch above the price

Moving up the range brings technology and convenience usually found in vehicles further up the price ladder. Behind the two-spoke, flat-bottomed steering wheel sits a four-inch LCD instrument cluster. Seats are trimmed in premium fabric as standard, with genuine leather upholstery available as an option across the range, and the dashboard features a single or dual-tone finish depending on the grade.

Depending on the derivative, features extend from Harman infotainment and automatic climate control to a 360-degree Surround View Camera, Blind View Monitor, panoramic sunroof, wireless smartphone integration and wireless charging.

Compact outside, practical inside

At 3,995 mm long, the Osprey is compact enough to slip through congested city traffic with ease. Despite that footprint, it offers a 382-litre boot, while 208 mm of ground clearance adds confidence on gravel roads and tougher surfaces.

Choosing your Osprey

The range opens with the Smart+ MT at R249,900. It pairs the turbocharged engine with a manual gearbox and includes the full safety package, a seven-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED headlamps and DRLs, rear parking sensors and 16-inch wheels.

For R279,900, the Smart+ DCA builds on that specification with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, paddle shifters and selectable drive modes.

The Creative DCA, priced at R309,900, adds a 10.25-inch Harman infotainment system, automatic climate control with rear air vents, cruise control, a 360-degree surround view camera and a blind view monitor, along with alloy wheels and roof rails.

Topping the range at R329,900, the Creative+ PS DCA brings comforts traditionally reserved for high-end models. Full LED headlamps and connected LED tail lamps sharpen the exterior, while an electric panoramic sunroof brightens the cabin. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless phone charger, keyless entry with push-button start, front parking sensors and a tyre pressure monitoring system complete the package.

“At R329 900, we believe the combination of turbocharged performance, a seven-speed DCA, panoramic sunroof and this level of technology makes Osprey a remarkably difficult package to match,” concluded Allison.
